Hawaii's values, traditions can inspire a nation

When I set out to achieve universal health care as first lady back in 1993, I knew I needed to learn from Hawaii's pioneering example. So I traveled to your state and met with health care professionals and community leaders to discuss how Hawaii's approach to health care could be a model for America. I was greatly impressed by what I saw.

I was impressed by your passionate belief that health care is not a luxury -- but a fundamental right. I was impressed by this state's proud progressive tradition and firm commitment to caring for all its citizens. And I was impressed by Hawaii's rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty.

But I know Hawaii also faces unique challenges -- from education to energy to the economy. And the people of Hawaii deserve a president who won't just talk about solutions to those problems -- but will actually deliver.

LibDem leader’s call for Trump application inquiry rejected

Nicol Stephen's call for a judicial inquiry into the Scottish Government's handling of Donald Trump's application to build a £1bn golf resort was scuppered yesterday.

The Scottish Liberal Democrat leader's call for a 28-day independent inquiry into the way the planning application had been dealt with headed by a judge failed to win the backing of the Tories.

Instead, Holyrood's local government committee is likely to carry out an inquiry, at the request of the Conservatives. First Minister Alex Salmond could be summoned to give evidence .

YDH Leads Country's Training For Bowel Cancer Surgeons, UK

YDH (Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) has been named as one of a handful of centres in England who will lead the way in providing training for the country's keyhole (laparoscopic) surgeons for patients with bowel cancer. The South West Laparoscopic Colorectal Consortium (SWLCC) will be managed at YDH and includes surgeons from across the region.

This is an initiative led and funded by the Department of Health, who have decided to develop the consortiums because until now there was no structured, uniform training strategy for this complex, and relatively new procedure. Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is a minimally-invasive method used to resect the bowel in cancer patients. The aim of the consortiums is to ensure the highest possible quality of patient care across the country.

THE tyre magnate Bob Jane was 58 when he arranged for a teenage beauty queen he fancied to hitch a ride in a Lear jet with the Beatle George Harrison to meet him at the Adelaide Formula One Grand Prix in the mid-1980s.

It was life in the fast lane for an 18-year-old from Bathurst but, after 20 years of marriage and three children, the souring of relations between the couple was yesterday played out in court.

Laree Madonna Jane, 40, was committed to stand trial on four charges of assaulting her husband, including with a 30-centimetre carving knife, during an argument at her South Yarra apartment in December 2006.

In a statement to police tendered to the Melbourne Magistrates Court, Bob Jane said the incident occurred when the couple had been separated for a month and he was invited to visit their eldest daughter Courtney, 18, who was recovering from surgery.

Exxon v. Venezuela and you’re the loser in this battle

Exxon claims it's won a round in its court battle against Venezuela. Venezuelan assets are now frozen in Britain and Netherlands. A lawsuit is in court int he U.S. as well. Exxon claims total Venezuelan assets valued at $36 billion dollars are now frozen.

In turn Venzuela is threatening to retaliate by cutting off oil exports to the U.S. in what it terms an economic war. Bet they won't have any trouble selling that oil elsewhere.

Of course nothing like a good slam-bang international oil crisis to set up another upward surge in crude oil prices which have now once again gone over $90 per barrel. Exxon v. Venezuela trumps recession fears for now. And this is another full employment act for lawyers. Even V's socialist regime will have to pay international law firms.

Democrats vie for Latino vote in heated presidential race

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama today launched their battles for the Latino vote, recognising the influence of the country's fastest growing community.

Tonight's scheduled Democratic debate in Las Vegas, to be held as results from the Michigan Republican primary come in, takes the competition for votes in Nevada to a new intensity. The state holds its caucus on Saturday, and with only limited polling in the state so far, defies efforts at prediction.

A poll of 500 likely caucus goers for the Reno Gazette-Journal yesterday showed a very narrow lead for Obama over Clinton with John Edwards close behind.

It's a dead heat in statistical terms. However, it reflects a gradual erosion of Clinton's double digit leads over Obama last autumn.

On the Republican side, where Saturday's caucus has been overshadowed by the party's primary in South Carolina on the same day, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and Mike Huckabee had the top three slots, but the leads were again statistically insignificant.
