Storm wrests lives from families, communities

Mark Aaron Brown was a recent graduate of Macon County High School. The young mans life, just beginning, was cut short by Tuesday nights tornado.

He was a really outgoing person. He didnt meet any strangers, said Browns father, Mark Allen Brown.

The elder Brown said his son was full of life. Father and son were both members of a local motorcycle club; Mark Allen said his son always looked forward to riding.

He wasnt working; his father said he was just trying to be a kid.

Mark Aaron Brown was visiting his 63-year-old grandmother at her Akersville Road home when the storm hit. The two huddled in a closet when the tornado blew through, crushing the house. His grandmother was hospitalized but is expected to recover.

I guess he told her right when the storm came through he wasnt scared, Mark Allen Brown said.

Remodeling offers practical, emotional benefits

Whether we love our homes or hate them, there is always something we dream of changing about them.

As residential architects, we naturally question what triggers someone to turn those remodeling dreams into reality.

There are three areas that motivate people to get the ball rolling. The first is the tangible need for a different physical arrangement. Things such as the anticipated birth of another child, a change in jobs with a plan to work from home or the need to bring a parent or relative into your home on a permanent basis are examples.

The second driving force is more emotional or psychological. This impetus stems from a desire to upgrade our current situation to make our homes more functional, livable and/or attractive.

While a new mudroom may not be critical to the family's survival, the increased control of clutter and the ability to find coats and backpacks easily on a school morning will contribute to your family's quality of life on a daily basis.

A Different Perspective

Yogi Bear stood at the entrance to Jellystone National Park. He scouted unattended picnic baskets while awaiting Boo Boo Bears arrival home on the school bus. Yogi and Boo Boo were co-owners of a playoff fantasy team. As Yogi considered himself smarter than the average bear, he figured his team had a decided advantage, but he needed Boo Boos help in researching and deciphering the most recent data before submitting teams for the next round of games. So he waited anxiously and kept a look out for Ranger Smith. The school bus screeched to a halt at the entrance and Boo Boo climbed down the steps, dragging his back pack behind him. The bus roared off in a cloud of dust and rubble. Hey, Boo Boo! Were still in first place in our fantasy league. Lets go look at the stats and make our picks. I dont want to play anymore, Yogi.

Food,Glorious Food

If all else fails, you can always cheat and call in the cavalry: home delivery. Steer clear of fast food (sandwiches in particular), which isn't at its freshest during Ramadan (hardly anyone orders it); instead, go for traditional grilled meats such as kebab, kofta, pigeon and quail. Team them with stuffed vegetables and baked tagens. (NM)

Make Them Feel SpecialMake sure there's something for everyone at your iftar table

The little people: Round them all up before iftar and make sure you have enough household help. As for the food, if you think children are miniature versions of ourselves and they should be eating everything we do, you're wrong. Try to serve up perennial favorites including chicken nuggets, chips and meatballs with spaghetti somewhere other than in the dining room, preferably close to a big TV.
