Chelsea's Quiet Pitch for Her Mom

Chelsea Clinton has no trouble talking, as it turns out, though she doesn't seem to enjoy it much. The former First Kid took audience questions for nearly an hour at a small campaign event today at the University of Maryland, where she was articulate, knowledgeable and almost completely without affect.

There's a reason most people have never heard her voice; at a campaign rally in Utah on Jan. 29, Chelsea told the crowd she'd never spoken in public before, and "I'm feeling a little bit intimidated about that.'' She did not seem particularly nervous in front of a couple of hundred people on the campus in College Park, but rarely smiled as she reeled off the details of her mother's campaign proposals in a soft near-monotone.

On a makeshift stage in the student union's lower level food court, she said hello and made just one point about her mom—briefly pitching her as a fiscal conservative—before going straight to the Q & A.

Altria's Split: Where There's Smoke…

On Jan. 30, Louis Camilleri, chairman and chief executive of Altria Group (MO), is expected to lay out formal plans to split the tobacco giant's U.S. and foreign operations into two companies. It's classic spinoff logic: Altria will separate its slow-growth, big-dividend domestic tobacco business from its faster-growing international unit. Philip Morris International will be based in Switzerland, while the domestic Altria will close its New York headquarters and move to Richmond, Va. Both companies' shares are expected to trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Once the deal is official, the relevant question for both companies will remain the same: How can they keep growing in a world that increasingly frowns on its signature product?

Wall Street applauds the spinoff, which has been anticipated for some time.

June 2006

Amy used to tell me how she talks to Kristen every day," Carol said. "I know she's talking to her now." In just 21 years, Amy touched the lives of so many around her. She attended Bourne High School, and worked for years at the Dunkin' Donut on Cranberry Highway in Wareham. She didn't have a best friend. Just about everybody was her best friend...

CATA's crossroad Riders may face service cuts, route changes in wake ...

CATA's budget is paid primarily through its millage ($12 million), state subsidies ($9.2 million), and fares ($4.2 million).

Randy Schaetzl, a CATA rider and professor of geography at MSU, voted for the CATA millage in November and said he would vote for it again. But he thinks CATA should seek out other revenue sources, such as advertising.

"I would hope that they would be strongly considering that (advertising) along with other revenue sources they'll have to tap," he said.

But CATA has a policy against using advertising on its buses and shelters, said Board Chairwoman Patricia Munshaw. The thinking behind the policy is to "maintain a positive image for the organization," she said.

"It's uncluttered," she said. "It just presents a more professional looking image."

But CATA may take another look at advertising given its current situation, Kuhnmuench said.

Under the Hood With Knight Rider 2.0: Trans Am vs. Ford Mustang ...

Times change people and with changing times comes new ideas. And crying over the new KITT absolutley ludicrous. IT'S NOT REAL PEOPLE!! The mustang is a PERFECT choice for the new KITT not only because of styling but also because of it's availibility. The Trans Am was discontinued in 2002 for good reason. It's popularity had sunk so low that GM had no alternative. Same story w/ the Camaro, not to mention they're pieces of crap. As for the corvette, yes it's still a popular, mass-produced, vehicle. But do you think NBC is gonna shell money for 10 corvettes or however many they'd go thru in a show? Much less a season? I highly doubt it. Fact is NBC made a decision and they're sticking w/ it. You wanna change it? Become a network president and change it. If not, quit crying about it. Because as many of you "purists" there are, there's a lot more people out there who are gonna want to check the new continuation of the show who watched the show when they were kids, and their kids are gonna watch and the newer version of the same rollercoaster ride is going to be as good if not better than the 1st.
