| Lycopene supplement aimed at skin protection
The Israeli firm has been taking steps in the niche market of cosmeceuticals as consumers seek products which help boost their appearance. One of the newest trends in nutritional foods is the emergence of the "beauty from within" segment, which is predicted to become a strong niche over the next few years. Now LycoRed has been granted patent protection for the ingredient in Australia. The ingredient is a carotenoid composition of lycopene, phytoene, phytofluene, and optionally vitamin E, that protects the skin from the damaging effects of UV radiation. This novel cosmeceutical preparation can be delivered via a dietary supplement or in a fortified food or beverage, LycoRed said."While up until now, the dominant means for supplementing the diet with important nutrients was via capsules, what we offer here, is quite unique," Zohar Nir, vice president of new product development said."This is a natural lycopene composition that can be either encapsulated in a soft gel or easily added to a beverage to create a year round fortified sun protection drink.
Monday Letters to the Editor
Excepting the moral argument for adequate teacher salaries, the rising cost of education is due primarily to entitlements, waste, incompetence and a leadership vacuum. Education is becoming re-segregated by socio-economic class. This is a sinister but effective exclusion of the most needy. - DONALD A. SELLEK Manhattan Beach .
Gaza plunges into darkness after plant shuts down
Hamas officials shut down the plant and plunged Gaza City into total darkness, Gaza Energy Authority head Kanan Obeid said. TV crews and reporters were invited to witness the shutdown just before 8 pm (2330 IST). Minutes later, Gaza residents started a candlelight march as a protest. Live Associated Press TV pictures showed dots of light moving slowly up a main straight. The regular fuel shipment from Israel did not arrived because the fuel terminal was closed, and the plant has nearly no reserves, said Rafik Maliha, director of the power plant. Health Ministry official Dr Moaiya Hassanain warned that the fuel cutoff would cause a health catastrophe. ''We have the choice to either cut electricity on babies in the maternity ward or heart surgery patients or stop operating rooms,'' he said.

CNN Invites Charles Barkley to Trash Conservative 'Fake Christians'
Then the conversation turned to John McCain, and that's where Barkley unloaded his attack on conservatives: BARKLEY: Hey, I live in Arizona. I have got great respect for Senator McCain. Great respect. But I don't like the way the Republicans are taking this country. Every time I hear the word "conservative," it makes me sick to my stomach, because they're really just fake Christians, as I call them. That's all they are. But I just — I'm going to vote Democratic no matter what. Barkley discussed how he plans to run for Governor of Alabama in 2014. He's been talking about running for that office for years. Does Barkley have any idea that it might be a little tougher to win in Alabama now that he's trashed all the "fake Christians" in that state who disagree with him on the social issues? (Is this the kind of help Obama needs in allegedly bringing people together?) Blitzer gently brought Barkley back around to the "fake Christians" issue, and basically waited until Barkley had tried to explain himself before noting at the very end that perhaps some (or, perhaps, most) Christians are sincere: BLITZER: All right.
